Before climbing Ben was involved with swimming for 10 years and competed in triathlon. Both these required plenty of training and discipline which Ben has carried over into climbing, with great effect.
Ben was recently involved in a climbing accident which left him with a broken wrist, heel and pelvis. With characteristic energy Ben is already working hard towards returning to form. Ben has huge enthusiasm to push forward and progress his climbing. Monkey Fist is incredibly happy to sponsor such an enthusiastic and hard working athlete. Ben is highly encouraging of both climbing and the Monkey Fist brand.
Monkey Fist asked Ben a few questions about his climbing:
Why do you climb?
“It’s challenging, diverse and a good laugh.”
Best or most memorable climbing experience?
Best: “clipping the chains of Eye of Odin”
Most memorable: “Onsighting Femme Blanche in Ceuse just as it started raining, then hiding under the crag until it stopped before legging it down the hill to bail out the tents.”
Why taking care of your skin is important to you and your climbing?
“I have pretty dry skin normally so if I don’t sand and moisturise at least daily then my skin normally cracks or gets thin, and once its thin it can take weeks or even months to get back to normal.”
Top grades, hardest onsights, Ascents your psyched on having done?
“Eye of Odin 8c+, Bon viatge 8a OS, Le Pillier 8A are my hardest. Psyched to have done L’ami de tout le Monde 8b in Ceuse, and to have ground upped County Ethics 7C at Back Bowden in Northumberland.”
What are your future climbing goals ?
“La Dura Dura is the big one, but every step along the way is really important. Improve my onsighting, would love to be able to consistently onsight in the mid 8’s in the not-too-distant future. “
